HARTLAND CARRIAGES OPEN DAY
A report and some photos are available on the webpage via the button.
It is with great great sadness and much regret that I have to inform you that Maurice Page passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday 21st December 2021.
As Area Commissioner it is my duty to inform this about one of our Members.
But this is very, very different - I knew Maurie well and had spent a lot of time with him over the past few years. Maurie was kind hearted and loyal and would do anything to help anyone. He had been a member of the BDS for many years and was very well respected by everyone.
Very often would he tell me stories about his adventures down in the New Forest and even to his last week, he was telling me about his palomino mares that he used to drive. He supported me when I became AAC and even more so when I took on the role of Area Commissioner. Maurie was always there - to offer help and advice when you needed it. He never ever let me down - every time I asked for his help at an event he was always there - through September Driving Week, at the camp, different meetings and meals - I’m sure some of them he didn’t really want to come to but because I asked him to come, he did.
When I first came to Grayswood I would always be the one to take a newly broken horse or pony out on its first drive and Maurie would always be the ‘volunteered’ groom for me. We did get into some sticky situations and not once did he ever leave me - no matter what happened, Maurie would always be by your side. He had an amazing knowledge of the New Forest - all the times we’ve been down there, he only got us lost once on the way to Beaulieu Road - and even then I think he wanted to take the scenic route!
I’ll never ever forget him nor the memories we all made together. He was tragically taken from us far too early but he will always be with us - his wise words about the horses I will always hear.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.
His funeral took place on Tuesday 11th January 2022 at 3.15pm at Wessex Vale Crematorium, Bubb Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 2HL and afterwards at Botley Park Hotel & Spa, Winchester Road, Boorley Green, Southampton.
The family welcomed many of Maurice’s friends and driving companions who joined them to celebrate his life.
