Hampshire BDS Carriage Driving Route 8:
Wootton Bridge and Wilverley
|Start :||Wootton Bridge car park (SZ 250998) or if full try Wilverley car park (SU 253007) which is larger.|
|Distance :||6 miles (or 3 miles for a single circuit)|
|Terrain :||Two pleasant circuits entirely on gravel tracks with a short road linking them. Wootton is wilder, while Wilverley is more formal and park-like.|
|Instructions :||From Wootton Bridge car park, turn right on the road across the
bridge and up the hill. After ¼ mile take a rather inconspicuous track
to the right (Post 185) beside Holly Cottage and go through the locked
bargate. After another ¼ mile enter Wootton Coppice inclosure through a
gate and down the hill to a crossroads where you turn left (at Post
Brownhills enclosure and keep right at the top of the hill (Post 179). Turn left at Post 181 and keep on this track for a mile until you emerge on the road (at Post 190). Turn left over the bridge to reach the car park.
For the Wilverley circuit, carry on up the road, right and left, until you reach Wilverley car park. Enter the inclosure through the gate and turn left at Post 220 for a clockwise circuit. Follow the post numbers, keeping right at each junction. Go sharp right at 226 and after a steep hill keep straight on until you reach the exit gate into the car park. Return the way you came to Wootton Bridge.
|Additional Information :||Excellent food is served at the Rising Sun pub (one mile south west on the road from Wootton Bridge). You can tie up your horses to the hitching rail, which was erected in memory of Thea Woodford, a veteran member of the Hampshire BDS and founder of the New Forest ‘galloping grannies’ group.|
